How many clothes does a newborn actually need?
Updated September 2026 · Baby Box
Short answerPlan on 7–10 everyday outfits plus 4–6 sleepers for the first month, which covers 2–3 outfit changes a day with laundry every 2–3 days. Buy only a few pieces in Newborn size and more in 0–3M, because many babies outgrow Newborn size within weeks.
Newborns go through clothes quickly because of spit-up and diaper leaks. How much you need depends mostly on how often you do laundry:
| Laundry schedule | Everyday outfits | Sleepers |
| Every day | 5–7 | 3–4 |
| Every 2–3 days | 7–10 | 4–6 |
| Once a week | 12–14 | 7–8 |
Babies born at 8 pounds or more may skip Newborn size completely. A safer plan is 3–5 Newborn pieces, with most of your first-month clothing in 0–3M.

Baby clothing sizes by age and weight
Updated September 2026 · Baby Box
Short answerGo by your baby's weight and length, not their age. Most babies wear each size for about 2–3 months in the first year. After 12 months growth slows, and each size lasts longer.
| Size | Approx. weight | Typical time in size |
| Newborn | up to 8 lb | 0–4 weeks, or skipped |
| 0–3M | 8–12.5 lb | 2–3 months |
| 3–6M | 12.5–16.5 lb | 2–3 months |
| 6–9M | 16.5–20.5 lb | 3 months |
| 9–12M | 20.5–24 lb | 3 months |
| 12–18M / 18–24M | 24–30 lb | 4–6 months each |
| 2T–3T | 29–34 lb | 6–12 months each |
Weights are typical ranges for major U.S. brands; each brand's chart is slightly different. Babies usually double their birth weight by about 5 months.

How much do baby clothes cost in the first year?
Updated September 2026 · Baby Box
Short answerBuying all-new clothing at typical store prices, a baby's first year of clothes costs roughly $750–1,500 across 5 size stages. Using hand-me-downs and secondhand clothes can bring that under $300. A Baby Box Monthly plan is $504 for 48 pieces you choose.
| Approach | Assumption | First-year cost |
| All new, store prices | 5 sizes × 10–12 outfits × $15–25 | $750–1,500 |
| Baby Box Monthly | 12 boxes × 4 pieces × $10.50 | $504 |
| Mostly secondhand | Thrift, resale and hand-me-downs | $100–300 |
Estimates by Baby Box. Your costs depend on gifts, sales and how often you do laundry.
Which baby clothes can you skip?
Updated September 2026 · Baby Box
Short answerSkip hard-soled shoes before walking, lots of Newborn-size clothing, outfits with many small buttons, and loose blankets for sleep. Put that money toward 0–3M and 3–6M basics, which babies wear the longest in the early months.
- Shoes before walking. Socks or soft booties keep feet warm, and shoes aren't needed until your baby walks.
- Too much Newborn size. It may fit for only a few weeks, or not at all.
- Outfits with lots of buttons. Snaps and zippers make middle-of-the-night changes much faster.
- Loose blankets for sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a clear crib. A wearable blanket or sleep sack keeps baby warm instead.
- Special-occasion outfits. One or two are plenty. These are the pieces most often received as gifts.

What baby clothes make a good baby shower gift?
Updated September 2026 · Baby Box
Short answerGive practical clothes in 3–6M or 6–12M size. Parents usually get lots of Newborn and 0–3M outfits at showers, then run short when baby grows. Sleepers and everyday sets are used more than dressy outfits.
Choose a size for the season baby will actually be wearing it. For a baby due in March, 6–12M clothes will be worn in fall and winter. The Baby Box Gift Box ($49) includes 4 pieces in the size you pick, gift-wrapped with a handwritten note.
How to dress a baby for Utah, Idaho and Arizona weather
Updated September 2026 · Baby Box
Short answerA common rule is to dress baby in one more layer than you're comfortable in. In Arizona summers that often means a single breathable cotton layer and shade. In Idaho and northern Utah winters, use layers and a warm outer layer, but take off bulky coats in the car seat.
- Arizona: lightweight cotton, sun hats and light long sleeves for sun protection. Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sun.
- Idaho: fleece, footed sleepers and layers you can take off indoors. Check baby's chest or neck to see if they're too warm.
- Utah: big temperature swings, so layers you can add and remove work best for mountain mornings and warm afternoons.
